• AMBRE: A Compact Instrument to Measure Thermal Ions, Electrons and Electrostatic Charging Onboard Spacecraft

The Active Monitor Box of Electrostatic Risks (AMBER) is a double-head thermal electron and ion electrostatic analyzer (energy range 0-30 keV) that was launched onboard the Jason-3 spacecraft in 2016. The next generation AMBER instrument, for which a first prototype was developed and then calibrated at the end of 2017, constitutes a significant evolution that is based on a single head to measure both species alternatively. The instrument developments focused on several new subsystems (front-end electronics, high-voltage electronics, mechanical design) that permit to reduce instrument resources down to ~ 1 kg and 1.5 W. AMBER is designed as a generic radiation monitor with a twofold purpose: (1) measure magnetospheric thermal ion and electron populations in the range 0-35 keV, with significant scientific potential (e.g., plasmasphere, ring current, plasma sheet), and (2) monitor spacecraft electrostatic charging and the plasma populations responsible for it, for electromagnetic cleanliness and operational purposes. Despite many decades of study, models of discharges in molecular gases still lack accurate data on many key col-lisional processes, both in the gas phase and on surfaces, necessary for reliable predictive modeling. Good data is lacking for electron-impact dissociation, surface recom-bination, reactions with metastables, gas heating mecha-nisms, energy transfer, and surface thermal accommoda-tion. This is true even for such “simple” and ubiquitous gases as O2 and N2. Diagnostic techniques have advanced significantly, with an emphasis on accurate absolute den-sity measurements, space and time resolution, and energy distribution functions (translational, rotational and vibra-tional). However, most studies focus on measuring only a few of the modeled parameters for a given system, and often in plasma configurations optimized for applications rather than for model/experiment comparison. Particularly problematic is the presence of large gradients (in temper-ature, density, composition) as well as poorly-controlled surface conditions. Our approach therefore is to use a well-characterized, stable and uniform discharge chosen to be simple to model, namely a DC positive column in pure O2, and to perform a comprehensive set of measure-ments of all accessible parameters using multiple (and sometimes overlapping) diagnostics. The mod-el/experiment comparison is therefore highly constrained, allowing the origin of discrepancies to be probed in un-precedented detail.
• Testing of the Taylor Frozen-in-flow Hypothesis at Electron Scales in the Solar Wind Turbulence

In single-spacecraft observations the Taylor frozen-in-flow hypothesis is usually used to infer wavenumber spectra of turbulence from the frequency ones. While this hypothesis can be valid at MHD scales in the solar wind because of the small phase speeds of the fluctuations in comparison with the solar wind flow speed, its validity at electron scales is questionable. In this paper, we use Cluster data to verify the validity of the Taylor hypothesis in solar wind turbulence using the test proposed in Sahraoui et al. based on the assumption that the spectral breaks occur at ρ i and ρ e. Using a model based on the dispersion relation of the linear whistler mode and the estimated ratios of the spectral breaks of the magnetic energy observed in the free-streaming solar wind, we find that 32% of the events would violate the Taylor hypothesis because of their high frequency (in the plasma rest frame) compared to the Doppler shift ${\boldsymbol{k}}$centerdot${\boldsymbol{V}}$(midω plas/kcenterdotV mid > 0.5). Furthermore, the model shows that those events would correspond to whistler modes with propagation angles θ kB ≤ 68°. The limitations of the method used and the implications of the results on future spacecraft measurements of electron-scale turbulence are discussed. (10.3847/1538-4357/ab17d3)

In this article we aim to highlight the problems related to the structure and stability of the comparatively thin current sheets that were relatively recently discovered by space missions in the magnetospheres of the Earth and planets, as well as in the solar wind. These magnetoplasma structures are universal in collisionless cosmic plasmas and can play a key role in the processes of storage and release of energy in the space environment. The development of a self-consistent theory for these sheets in the Earth's magnetosphere, where they were first discovered, has a long and dramatic history. Solution of the problem of the thin current sheet structure and stability become possible in the framework of a kinetic quasi-adiabatic approach required to explain their embedding and metastability properties. It was found that the structure and stability of current structures are completely determined by the nonlinear dynamics of plasma particles. Theoretical models have been developed to predict many properties of these structures and interpret many experimental observations in planetary magnetospheres and the heliosphere. • Electric contacts subject to high currents : Fundamental processes and application to the interaction between lightning and aeronautic structures

  , 2019. Lightning is a natural hazardous event that strikes a civil aircraft on average once per 1500 hours of flight. The corresponding high and impulsive currents that may flow along the structure of the aircraft can generate physical constraints with major consequences regarding safety. In particular, when a fastened assembly is crossed by a lightning current, important electric fields and Joule power densities may give birth to a variety of discharge phenomena. The sparking risk is particularly critical in fuel tanks, and different lightning protection technologies and certification procedures are employed to face it. The ignition of discharges is believed to be mostly due to the local electrical resistance at the interfaces between the parts of the assemblies. The aim of this thesis was to model to phenomena that occur at a microscopic scale of such contact resistances subject to high and impulsive currents.
• The focusing problem for the Leith model of turbulence: a self-similar solution of the third kind

Time-dependend evolution of hydrodynamic turbulence corresponding to formation of a thermodynamic state at the large-scale part of the spectrum is studied using the inviscid Leith model. In the wave vector space, the evolution leads to shrinking of the zero-spectrum "hole"-the so-called focusing problem. However, in contrast with the typical focusing problem in the nonlinear filtration theory, the focusing time is infinite for the Leith model. Respectively, the evolution is described by a self-similar solution of the third kind (discovered in Nazarenko, Grebenev [Phys A: Math. Theor. 50, 3, 2017]), and not the second kind as in the case of the typical filtration problem. Using a phase-plane analysis applied to the dynamical system generated by this type of similarity, we prove the existence of a new self-similar spectrum to this problem. We show that the final stationary spectrum scales as the thermodynamic energy equipartition spectrum, E ∼ k 2 . (10.1088/1751-8121/ab0da5)
