, 2011, pp.951. Ganymede is the only magnetized moon in the solar system embedded in its large parent's planet magnetosphere. Its internal magnetic field interacts strongly with the Jovian magnetospheric plasma and makes unique this interaction. Thermal magnetospheric ions co-rotate at about 180km/s and are mainly composed of oxygen ions and protons. Few MHD models [1],[2] succeeded in describing accurately the global shape of the magnetosphere and reproduce most of the signatures observed by Galileo but they are unable to take in consideration high gyroradius effects or multiple ions dynamic. Therefore we developed a 3D parallel multi-species hybrid model based on a CAM-CL algorithm [3] which has been largely used for other magnetized or unmagnetized body such as Mars, Titan or Mercury.

, 2011, 6, pp.EPSC-DPS2011-760. The interaction of the Hermean magnetosphere and the Solar Wind is investigated using a 3-dimensional parallel multi-species hybrid model. In the simulation, it is assumed that Mercury is at its Aphelion and the IMF orientation is the orientation reported by MESSENGER during its first flyby. The principal regions of this interaction are reproduced by the hybrid model and the electromagnetic field spatial variations are described as well. This model represents a strong tool to study Mercury's plasma environment.

The role played together by opacity and geometry is critical for the physics of these shock waves. Moreover, radiation is an obvious way of probing these shock waves, either by self-emission or by probe absorption. Étude d'une source d'ions obtenue par extraction et accélération à partir d'une source plasma filaire

L'objet de ce travail consiste dans un premier temps en la modélisation d'une source plasma filaire en régime continu basse pression, puis, dans un second temps, en la caractérisation des propriétés d'une source d'ions développée sur la base de la source plasma préalablement étudiée. Un code particulaire permettant de modéliser le fonctionnement de la source plasma est ainsi développé, puis validé par comparaison avec les résultats d'une étude expérimentale. A la lueur des résultats de simulation, une analyse de la décharge en termes d'écoulement ionique de Child-Langmuir collisionnel en géométrie cylindrique est proposée, permettant alors d'interpréter la transition de mode comme une réorganisation naturelle de la décharge lorsque le courant de décharge excède un courant limite fonction de la tension de décharge, de la pression et de l'espace inter-électrodes. L'analyse de la fonction de distribution en énergie des ions impactant la cathode met par ailleurs en évidence la possibilité d'extraire un faisceau d'ions de faible dispersion en énergie autour de la tension de décharge, et ce sous réserve d'opérer la décharge dans son mode haute pression. Un prototype de source d'ions permettant l'extraction et l'accélération d'ions à partir de la source filaire est alors proposé. L'étude expérimentale d'un tel dispositif confirme le fait que l'adjonction d'un processus d'accélération se traduit par un simple décalage de la fonction de distribution en vitesse des ions d'une valeur correspondant à la tension d'accélération, mais ne l'élargit pas. Il est ainsi possible de produire des faisceaux d'ions de diverses espèces ioniques, d'énergie modulable (0-5 keV) et de dispersion en énergie limitée (~ 10 eV). Les courants de faisceau mesurés sont de quelques dizaines de micro-ampères, et la divergence d'un tel faisceau est de l'ordre du degré. Une modélisation numérique de cette source d'ions est finalement entreprise afin d'identifier de possibles optimisations du concept proposé.

In this context an X-ray imager is necessary to diagnose the core size and shape of the DT-target in the 10-100 keV band in complement of neutron imaging system. Such a diagnostic will be composed of two parts: an X-ray optical system and a detection assembly. Each element will be affected by the harsh environment created by fusion reactions. , 2012, 83 (2), pp.02A721. To understand the plasma characteristics in the extraction region of negative H− sources is very important for the optimization of H− extraction from the sources. The profile of plasma density and electrostatic potential in the extraction region with and without extraction grid voltage are analyzed with a 2D particle in cell modeling of the NIFS-RD H− sources. The simulation results make clear the physical process forming a double ion plasma layer (which consists only of positive H and negative H− ions) recently observed in the Cs-seeded experiments of the NIFS-R&D source in the vicinity of the extraction hole and the plasma grid. The results also give a useful insight into the formation mechanism of the plasma meniscus and the H− extraction process for such double ion plasma.

In negative ion sources for the neutral beam injection, it is important to calculate H atom flux onto the plasma grid (PG) surface for the evaluation of H− production on the PG surface. We have developed a neutral (H2 molecules and H atoms) transport code. In the present study, the neutral transport code is applied to the analysis of the H2 and H transport in a NIFS-R&D ion source in order to calculate the flux onto the PG surface. Taking into account non-equilibrium feature of the electron energy distribution function (EEDF), i.e., the fast electron component, we have done the neutral transport simulation. The results suggest that the precise evaluation of the EEDF, especially in the energy range 15 eV < E < 30 eV is important for the dissociation rate of H2 molecules by the electron impact collision and the resultant H atom flux on the PG.
Effect of fast positive ions incident on caesiated plasma grid of negative ion source

, 2012, 83 (2), pp.02B101. This paper describes the effect on negative ion formation on a caesiated surface of the backscattering of positive ions approaching it with energy of a few tens of eV. For a positive ion energy of 45 eV, the surface produced negative ion current density due to these fast positive ions is 12 times larger than that due to thermal atoms, thus dominating the negative ion surface production instead of the thermal atoms, as considered until now.

The knowledge of the mean free path (mfp) of the negative ions is important for many purposes, e.g. evaluating the distance from which the ions can be extracted, or understanding the significance of experimental results. We will present the mfp for similar conditions in volume and caesium seeded sources.
