DC glow discharges in pure O2 in a Pyrex tube were studied to determine dissociation rate constant over a wide range of E/N and thereby to probe O2 dissociation cross section close to threshold. Electric field, E, was found from probe measurements while the gas density, N, from the gas temperature derived from the O2(b1g )  O2(X3g-) emission spectrum. O atom density (as well ratio O/N ratio) was measured by HR TALIF while O/N ratio was also determined by Ar actinometry. Time-resolved actinometry of partially-modulated discharges was used to probe the O loss rate. The O2 dissociation rate constant was determined as a function of E/N, and compared to calculations from different O2 cross section sets. This comparison allowed validation of a the self-consistent cross section set for O2.

, 2017. O atoms play a key role in the efficiency of CO2 plasma recycling processes because their reactions can either promote or reduce the conversion of CO2. We have measured the O atom density and recombination probability by means of actinometry and TALIF and compared the results with the time evolution of CO measured by FTIR spectroscopy in pulsed glow discharge.

Systematic space debris collection using Cubesat constellation

, 2017. http://sharemyspace.global/index.php/research/ | Since recent space debris mitigation measures are not enforced at a global level among the community of both private and puclic satellite operators, Active space Debris Removal (ADR) will soon be needed to stabilize the amount of space junk in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), in order both to ensure the safety of future space missions and protect the human populations on Earth against uncontrolled atmospheric reentries of large space debris. Recently, many options were contemplated for ADR using various mission strategies and capture systems. Some of them are being tested by the European Union (EU) demonstration mission RemoveDebris. However, demonstration costs mount up to hundreds of millions of euros in most cases. Share My Space developed an incremental approach for systematically collecting small-sized catalogued space debris based on a constellation of 6U cubesats featuring a stereoscopic detection system combined with an integrated LIDAR, and ion thruster operated with iodine. The advantage of using a constellation is to target all the space debris around a given altitude while limiting expensive orbit inclination change maneuvers. Over its 2-year lifetime, each Cubesat can perform a rendezvous with up to 50 space debris and bring each of them to temporary storage tank in orbit for further recycling. Off-the-shelf Cubesat technologies make the demonstration process affordable. Moreover, flexible constellation management makes it easier to target the essential debris to be cleaned. Finally, SC design is scalable, allowing to capture larger space debris after technological maturation. The aim of this study is to capitalize on recent improvements and mission design for space debris removal, particularly thanks to the European e.deorbit, CleanSpace, and Remove debris missions to assess how to remove small and medium-sized space debris using a constellation of nanosatellites. Les particules chargées dans l'héliopshère

Le Soleil est une étoile active qui émet en permanence un flot de particules chargées, appelé vent solaire, principalement composé de protons et délectrons, se propageant à des vitesses supersoniques dans le milieu interplanétaire. Ce vent solaire interagit avec les objets du système solaire et on sintéressera plus particulièrement à son interaction avec les planètes. Linteraction du vent solaire avec les planètes produit une onde de choc en amont de la planète (voir Figure 1) qui permet de décélérer le vent solaire et de le dévier autour de lobstacle planétaire. Lobstacle planétaire forme une énorme bulle autour de la planète enveloppant son atmosphère et son champ magnétique. Les observations à bord de satellites ont permis dobserver et de caractériser la distribution des particules dans divers environnements planétaires, et en particulier dans lenvironnement terrestre plus facilement accessible. Ces observations satellitaires ont permis de montrer en particulier que la frontière entre les milieux planétaire et interplanétaire nest pas étanche. Des processus de petite échelle tels que la reconnexion magnétique ou des instabilités de frontière peuvent se développer et induire un échange de matière et dénergie entre les deux milieux. On discutera leur efficacité en fonction des planètes. Enfin, le Soleil émet aussi des événements énergétiques de grande ampleur comme les éjections de masse coronale (voir Figure 1). Ces événements solaires peuvent avoir des répercussions importantes sur les environnements planétaires. Dans le cas de la Terre, ils peuvent endommager les équipements électroniques embarqués, perturber les liaisons GPS, et même induire des courants dans les lignes à haute tension. On présentera quelques aspects des processus dinteraction impliqués

Z-pinch research in France an overview over 4 décades (1976-2016)

, 2017. The Z-pinch (ZP) is a rather unique source of dense, hot, transient plasma which has attracted interest early, in the quest for fusion. France has participated to this effort in few national Institutions and has developed a renowned expertise in pulsed power science and technology. After recalling the physical background, we will give a chronological presentation of case studies. ZP machines were built in French labs, Atomic Energy Commission, Armament Agency and Ecole Polytechnique for larger ones, as well as in universities with compact devices. For each we will describe the performances and the main scientific achievements. The research has been mainly oriented to the generation of copious doses of x-rays. Based on theoretical considerations, drawbacks were expected from some instabilities growing during the compression. Thus, Z-pinch stabilization was a major issue and was addressed by various techniques: gas-puff profiling, staged ZP, Bz, plasma puff, plasma on wire, composite ZP. In general, the generators were based on capacitive storage but a strong effort was done of inductive storage. Moreover, the work in France has been strongly connected to other Z-pinch programs in the UK, in Russia and in the USA and a number of joint experiments were performed. Selected results of these cooperative works will be given too. Last but not least, we will conclude by new trends. The laboratory has contributed to introduce innovative approaches of the load, supported by complete numerical simulations. They are currently tested, even used routinely, on world-class generators : load current multiplier, flat array ZP, multiple-ZP hohlraum.

INVESTIGATION OF POLARIZATION SIGNATURES OF HOT ELECTRONS OF L-SHELL Mo X-PINCH PLASMA PRODUCED BY THE COMPACT GENERATOR OF ECOLE POLYTECHNIQUE

, 2017. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is applied and compared with the SCRAM model for investigating the electron beam effects on the L-shell Mo of X Pinch produced spectra. PCA of L-shell Mo are extracted over a non-LTE collisional radiative L-shell Mo model with and without presence of hot electrons to discuss the electron beam effects. Furthermore, PC spectra of L shell Cu and Mo ( including Ne-like, F-Like and Na-Like transitions) are also studied and compared to investigate the polarization types of these transitions. The extracted PCs are used to estimate the plasma electron temperature, density and beam fractions from a representative time integrated spatially resolved L-shell Cu X-pinch plasma spectrum. The experimental spectrum is produced by the explosion of 25-μm Cu wires on a compact LC (40 kV, 200 kA, 200 ns) generator. The modeled plasma electron temperatures are about Te~600 eV and Ne=1x1020 cm-3 in the presence of the fraction of the beams with f~0.1 and centered energy of ~10 keV.
