Student Space Center

Overview

The Student Space Center of École Polytechnique (CSEP) is an educational and scientific structure based at École Polytechnique, enabling students to actively participate in concrete space projects related to space engineering, space physics, and associated technologies (propulsion, telecommunications, attitude control, etc.).

Objectives of the CSEP

  • Introduce engineering students and PhD candidates to space research and the management of complex technological projects.

  • Provide a framework to design, manufacture, test, and launch real nano-satellites (CubeSat-type).

  • Strengthen links between academic training and partners in the space sector (CNES, ESA, research laboratories, and industry).

Involvement of the LPP

  • The LPP contributes its expertise in plasma physics, particularly in the development of miniaturized diagnostics for CubeSat missions, in connection with projects such as X-CubeSat and IonSat. This collaboration enables students to work on onboard experiments under the supervision of LPP researchers and engineers.

  • The LPP also contributes to the training of École Polytechnique students by participating in the Advanced Track “Science and Challenges of Space,” integrated within the ESDS Chair. This program offers high-level courses in physics, mechanics, applied mathematics, and computer science, allowing students to specialize in the space field. Within this framework, the LPP proposes research projects and supervises practical work, thereby strengthening the link between teaching and research.

  • Finally, the LPP provides technical support to CSEP activities by granting access to its experimental facilities, workshops, and plasma measurement equipment. This infrastructure allows students to design, test, and validate instruments intended for space platforms. This close collaboration illustrates the LPP’s commitment to an integrated research–education approach, fostering technological innovation and scientific training.

The CSEP thus serves as a genuine springboard toward careers in the space sector, while also supporting specialized academic programs (space track, ESDS Chair).
